There’s something about taking Georgie, my dachshund, through the drive-thru that makes a simple coffee run feel like an event. He hops into the passenger seat with all the seriousness of a seasoned co-pilot, paws on the window ledge, nose twitching at the smell of roasted beans and fresh pastries.
When we get to the menu board he is staring or maybe reading it. Not sure which. As we roll up to the speaker, he tilts his head like he’s listening closely—probably wondering if the voice in the box is talking to him. I really believe he is listening to make sure the order is correct. By the time we reach the window, his tail is wagging so hard it could power the car. The barista leans out, grinning, and asks if he’d like a pup cup. His ears perked up immediately, as if he has been waiting for that question all his life.
While I sip my coffee, he dives face-first into his little cup of whipped cream, leaving a frosty white mustache on his snout. Passersby can’t help but laugh, and honestly, neither can I. It’s just another reminder that the simplest outings are the ones that bring the most joy—especially when shared with a dachshund.
The coffee run tire him out. He must take a power nap before the afternoon activities.
